The concept
PRINTER TECHNOLOGIES
Laser printers use a seven-step electrostatic process: Processing (image rendering), Charging (drum coated with uniform negative charge), Exposing (laser discharges areas matching the image), Developing (toner attracted to discharged areas), Transferring (toner electrostatically pulled from drum to paper), Fusing (heat and pressure melts toner into paper fibers), Cleaning (drum cleared for next page). Fusing is why laser-printed pages are warm and why the fuser assembly requires periodic replacement.
Incorporate other printer types: Inkjet uses liquid ink in cartridges, spraying microscopic droplets through heated nozzles (thermal) or piezoelectric elements. It excels at color photographs but has higher per-page cost and slower output than laser. Thermal printers need no ink or toner at all — the printhead heats regions of special paper, activating the dye coating. Used for receipts, shipping labels, and medical tags. Dot-matrix printers strike an ink-soaked ribbon with pins; they are slow but can print carbon-copy multipart forms.
DISPLAY PANEL TECHNOLOGIES
TN (Twisted Nematic) panels achieve the lowest response times (1 ms) and cost less, but have narrow viewing angles — colors wash out when viewed off-axis. IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels align liquid crystals horizontally for wide 178° viewing angles and accurate color reproduction, making them preferred for design work and general-purpose monitors. OLED displays have no backlight — each pixel generates its own light and can switch completely off for true black, producing an infinite contrast ratio.
VIDEO CONNECTORS
VGA is an analog connector carrying video only — no audio, no digital. DVI-D carries digital video only. HDMI carries both digital video and audio in one cable and is the standard for consumer electronics and TVs. DisplayPort also carries audio and video but targets PC monitors and supports higher refresh rates, adaptive sync (G-Sync/FreeSync), and Multi-Stream Transport for daisy-chaining monitors.
Worked examples
Common mistakes
- Forgetting that the fusing stage (not transferring) is where toner permanently bonds to paper.
- Assuming OLED is always better than IPS — OLED can have burn-in risk and lower peak brightness for HDR.
- Using VGA for a new monitor setup — VGA is analog and degrades at high resolutions; use HDMI or DisplayPort.
- Confusing a KVM switch (many computers → one set of peripherals) with a video splitter (one source → many displays).
- Ordering a laser printer for photo printing — laser toner produces good text but cannot match inkjet for color photo quality.
